Being able to witness a K-Pop act on the American stage was something that fans could only hope for. Yet, K-Pop has exceeded expectations branching into the world of American entertainment, which is by far, one of the hardest industries to break through. And while fans are ecstatic that K-Pop and their idols are getting the recognition they deserve, in some cases it brings into question whether their act on stage was a win or a loss for the group.
This comes as a result of TWICE’s Victoria Secret performance. As many fans were ecstatic that the girls were going to be performers for this fashion show, the response that followed thereafter was not the best. With many viewers criticizing the group’s performance, comments such as “They cannot sing live,” to “This is not their best performance.” The expected performance became a lackluster one. Additionally, this isn’t the first time something like this has occurred. LE SSERAFIM’s performance at Coachella, was hit with an onslaught of negative comments, along with BLACKPINK too.
Unfortunately, most of these criticized performances came while performing on an American stage. So what is it with the American stage, that a group’s usually flawless performance and team work becomes messy?
Is it just a factor of nerves that the idol’s feel upon having to perform on such a wide stage, and in front of people that are not necessarily their fans? The jet lag which means that idol’s could not be in the best condition to sing and dance?
Performing on an American stage is definitely a big reach to further expand one’s popularity, however whether these stages are really benefitting the group is quite questionable.
Of course there are cases in which the American stage is a win. Take for example, BTS’ countless American stages which continued to impress many people, thus leading to an expansion of the fandom or even the more recent performance at ACL by RIIZE, which earned much praise and compliments despite the fact that the audience were majority non-fans.
Perhaps it’s because K-Pop tends to be more preppy, upbeat and more on the eccentric side that it feels a bit out of place on the American stage and among the general public. But let’s just hope that moving forward we’re able to see more impressive performances soon!
