Netizens react to RM's comment that 'The pursuit of vanity triggers intellectual exploration'

By A.R.M.Y AllKpop 15/08/2025

RM of BTS, the September cover model of ‘Harper’s Bazaar‘ magazine, discussed his taste in culture and the arts through a video interview.

When asked to share some tips on how to properly enjoy art at a gallery, RM stated that he typically approaches art in three ways. The first, which he coined as the most “idealistic” approach, consisted of experiencing an exhibit after educating oneself on the artist’s intentions and themes. The second, being a simpler approach, advised that it was perfectly fine to enjoy art that pleased the senses.

Lastly, the idol said,

“Third, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with me feeling good about myself for going to see exhibits. To be into the idea of seeing myself as a ‘cultured person’. Even if you go to an exhibit because you want to take a cool pic for your Instagram feed at first, it will still develop your taste in art and help you find the kind of art that you like. In fact, I’d say that the pursuit of vanity triggers intellectual exploration. So I think it’s fine to consume or enjoy art for vanity.”

Reacting to RM’s remarks, some netizens commented,

“I agree. Most people start to take an interest in something because they want to show it off. That’s why I got into photography.”

“I definitely think that’s better than not taking an interest in anything at all.”

“Exactly. Why can’t I act a little cultured and then feel good about myself for it?”

“I appreciate that RM has been so devoted to making fine art something more accessible to the public. Even if it’s for vanity, greater interest in the arts will undoubtedly result in that field’s growth and improvement.”

“Seriously people. Take more interest in art and culture and books! It makes you look smart and cultured, and you’ll actually gain a lot from it! None of that is a bad thing!”

“I think intellectual vanity is also different from superficiality. With the former, you still make an effort to understand something deeper. With the latter, you have no interest in actually understanding something, you just pretend that you do.”

“It used to be that people respected more intellectual hobbies like reading or art without unnecessary judgement. These days, if someone says they enjoy reading as a hobby, people will think they’re acting snobbish..”

“Yeah I started reading classical novels because I wanted to look smart lol.”

What do you think of RM’s observations?
