Why solo projects are becoming as important as group promotions in K-pop

K-pop has always been built on groups, but over the years, solo projects have become just as important. From the second generation until today, more idols are debuting as soloists while still being part of their groups. This shift has changed how fans experience music and how companies plan out their artists’ careers. Here’s a look at how solo careers have evolved through each generation and why they’ve become such a big deal.

Second Generation: The First Wave of Solos

Back in the late 2000s and early 2010s, idols began stepping into solo activities while still promoting with their groups. HyunA from 4minute became one of the first to carve out her identity as a soloist with hits like “Bubble Pop” and “Change,” while also finding success with the duet “Troublemaker.” Taeyeon from Girls’ Generation launched a solo career that solidified her reputation as one of the best vocalists in K-pop. And of course, G-Dragon from Big Bang set the standard by producing his own music, blending artistry with stardom and showing what a solo career could really look like. Taemin from SHINee rose to recognition as one of K-pop’s top male solo performers, while Sunmi transitioned into one of the most successful female soloists after leaving Wonder Girls.

Third Generation: Global Success and Individual Branding

As K-pop gained worldwide popularity, companies began promoting solo projects alongside group schedules. In 2018, Jennie from BLACKPINK made her solo debut with “SOLO,” setting streaming records and dominating YouTube. Around the same time, each BTS member began releasing individual music, showcasing their unique styles while staying connected to the group’s identity. The trend continued with artists like IU, who, although not from an idol group, rose to prominence in the same era and became a powerhouse soloist beloved for both her vocals and songwriting. From groups like EXO, members such as Baekhyun, Chen, and Kai also achieved significant solo recognition, with Baekhyun’s albums becoming some of the best-selling solo releases in K-pop history.

Fourth Generation and Beyond: The next generation of Solo Careers

By the time the fourth generation rolled in, solo releases had become a standard expectation. Fans began demanding solo projects from their favorite members, and companies realized that these releases extended group longevity and expanded global reach. Today, it’s common for idols to juggle both group and solo promotions, giving them the chance to explore their artistry and personal music preferences while keeping their group’s brand strong.

Among the most notable soloists, Choi Yeonjun of TXT made waves with individual performances and OST contributions that showcased his versatility.

From ATEEZ, Hongjoong and San have each drawn attention with covers and pre-release solo projects, hinting at future ventures that fans eagerly anticipate.

Chuu, formerly of LOONA, also carved out a solo identity post-group, quickly becoming beloved for her warm vocals and relatable charm. Meanwhile, NMIXX’s Lily and IVE’s Yujin have both attracted calls from fans for solo projects thanks to their vocal strength and star presence, reflecting the strong anticipation for more individual releases among 4th-gen groups.

Why Solo Careers Keep Rising

One reason is how fans consume music now. A solo track can chart globally without disrupting a group’s momentum. It also allows idols to experiment with different genres and showcase skills that may not fit within their group’s usual concept. Another factor is longevity, as groups might disband or go on hiatus, but solo careers keep individual members in the spotlight and relevant to the industry.

At the end of the day, solo projects have become a natural part of the K-pop system. Some fans love them for the diversity they bring, while others still prefer full group activities. Either way, solo debuts aren’t going anywhere, and they’ve become a defining feature of the modern K-pop landscape.
