Big Hit Music issues follow-up apology for referring to SUGA's scooter as an 'electric kickboard'

Big Hit Music has issued a follow-up statement of apology in light of the controversy surrounding BTS member SUGA’s DUI incident.

On August 8 KST, Big Hit Music relayed via Weverse, “We would like to clarify that there was no intention to scale down the issue at hand, and it was only later that we were able to confirm that the vehicle was not a kickboard.”

The agency continued, “Previously, we described the vehicle as an ‘electric kickboard’ believing that it was a foldable kickboard with a seat attachment. However, while confirming the facts in detail, we learned that such vehicle models vary by performance and specifications, and as a result, the degree of the crime committed can also vary based on the model.”

The agency then stated, “We would like to once again offer our apologies for failing to confirm matters in detail before relaying a statement. Once the investigators determine the exact model of the vehicle used and the consequences that can follow, we intend on taking full responsibility.”

Soon after news of SUGA’s DUI charges made news headlines on August 7 KST, Big Hit Music faced criticism for attempting to “scale down” the gravity of the issue by emphasizing that the vehicle used by the idol was an “electric scooter”, he was “wearing a helmet”, only traveled a short distance, and “fell while parking the scooter”, not while the vehicle was in motion.

Meanwhile, it is believed that the vehicle used by SUGA on the evening of August 6 KST was an electric scooter capable of traveling up to 30 km per hour, legally categorized according to South Korea’s Vehicle Administration Laws as a motorbicycle. Individuals who drive this type of vehicle while their blood alcohol concentration is over 0.08% and under 0.2% can face fines between 5 million ~ 10 million KRW, and in some severe cases, 1~2 years in prison.
