NewJeans’s streaming team has come under fire for referencing and using a streaming API (Application Programming Interface, or a way for two or more computer programs to communicate with each other for specific services) designed by BTS’s streaming information team without permission.
In light of the release NewJeans’s 2nd mini album ‘Get Up‘, fans dedicated to boosting streaming scores for the girl group recently launched a website which would allow Korean users to easily rack up streams efficiently and quickly on the streaming platform, Melon.
However, it was quickly discovered that the website was designed exactly like the website 52hz.kr, a website designed by BTS’s streaming information team, or ARMY52Hz.
In both cases, the websites first provide specific directions for how users can fill out information that will allow them to quickly stream songs on Melon, add cash to one’s Melon account, and also gift streams to others with the click of a button.
It turns out, the API used by 52hz.kr to connect Galaxy and/or iPhone users to the Melon app for services such as fast and convenient reloading of cash, etc, was invented by BTS fans for the purpose of contributing to Melon streams. Many other K-Pop fandoms have since “stolen” such features for use on a smaller scale; however, this time BTS’s streaming information team has decided to speak up over the complete design of the team’s website being copied without permission.
As the issue became a heated topic of debate on various online communities, NewJeans’s streaming team eventually released a statement of apology, recognizing the controversy. The streaming team confirmed that the new website “referenced the single-click streaming link used on the website run by BTS’s 52Hz streaming information team”, and that the team “did not realize this would be a problem, as it was believed that the instructions, the single-click link, the API, and the gifting feature were preexisting capabilities provided by Melon.”
The statement concluded by conveying, “We sincerely apologize and are reflecting on our actions. In order to prevent further damage and misunderstanding, the existing NewJeans streaming team will be dissolved, and we are currently in the process of discussing how collected donations will be returned.”
