BigHit Music has announced that it will not proceed with planned birthday content for BTS member V out of respect for the victims of the recent Jeju Air crash.
On December 30th, BigHit Music released an official statement via their social media accounts, stating, “We extend our deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in the aviation accident and offer our heartfelt sympathies to their bereaved families. We kindly ask for fans’ understanding regarding our decision not to post V’s birthday-related content today.”
The decision follows the tragic crash of Jeju Air flight 7C2216, which occurred at 9:07 AM on December 29th. The flight, carrying 181 passengers from Bangkok to Muan International Airport, attempted to land but crashed, resulting in the deaths of 179 individuals. The plane was severely damaged after colliding with structures near the runway and bursting into flames, causing significant casualties.
Recovery authorities have retrieved all victims except for two survivors and have secured part of the plane’s black box to investigate the cause of the accident.
The South Korean government has declared a national mourning period until January 4th. Memorial altars have been set up at Muan Airport and in 17 cities and provinces nationwide. Flags at half-mast will be raised across all government departments, local governments, and public institutions.
V enlisted as an active-duty soldier on December 11, 2023, and is currently serving in the Army’s 2nd Corps Command Military Police Special Unit in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province. His expected discharge date is June 10, 2025.
